The skill applies lazy initialization to useState by passing a function that computes the initial value, ensuring the calculation runs only on the first render. It prevents unnecessary recomputation of costly operations such as building indexes, parsing data, or reading from storage. It should be used when the initial value is expensive and depends on props or external data.
Use Lazy State Initialization
Pass a function to useState for expensive initial values. Without the function form, the initializer runs on every render even though the value is only used once.
Incorrect (runs on every render):

For simple primitives (useState(0)), direct references (useState(props.value)), or cheap literals (useState({})), the function form is unnecessary.
