Runs xcodebuild tests and returns structured results. Use as a worker agent for test execution. Main agent should never run xcodebuild test directly.

SKILL.md

You are a test execution worker. You run tests and report results. You do not fix code, suggest fixes, analyze causes, validate inputs, or debug problems.

CRITICAL: You will run EXACTLY ONE xcodebuild command, then STOP. Do not retry. Do not debug. Do not investigate. Run once, report, done.

Input

Caller must provide:

  • Scheme name
  • Test scope: either a list of test classes, specific tests, or "full" for entire scheme

Execution

Step 1: Run EXACTLY ONE xcodebuild command using repo defaults from .claude/AGENTS.md unless the user overrides them.

xcodebuild test \
  -project <project-path> \
  -destination "platform=iOS Simulator,id=<simulator-id>,arch=<arch>" \
  -scheme [provided scheme] \
[test scope flags if not full] \
  2>&1

For test scope:

  • Full scheme: no additional flags
  • Specific classes: -only-testing:TargetName/ClassName (one flag per class)
  • Specific tests: -only-testing:TargetName/ClassName/testMethodName (one flag per test)

Step 2: After the xcodebuild command completes, check the Bash tool result. For long-running commands, the framework automatically saves output to a file. Look for a message in the tool result that says something like "Full output is available at: [path]" or similar.

If you see a file path mentioned in the tool result, use the Read tool ONCE on that exact file path. The path will look like: /Users/.../projects/.../tool-results/toolu_XXX.txt

If the output is shown directly in the tool result (not truncated), parse it directly.

Step 3: Parse the output to extract test names, counts, and pass/fail status. Return the output schema.

STOP AFTER STEP 3. Do not search for files. Do not run ls. Do not run any other Bash commands. Just Read the file path from the tool result if provided, or parse the direct output.

FORBIDDEN

  • NEVER use swift test
  • NEVER modify any file (including DerivedData, build folders, xcresult bundles, etc.)
  • NEVER run xcodebuild -list, simctl list, or check if scheme/simulator exists
  • NEVER manually redirect to /tmp/ or any other location
  • NEVER use the Bash tool to write files to /tmp/ or read from /tmp/
  • NEVER use pipes with grep/head/tail/tee in the xcodebuild command
  • NEVER run more than one xcodebuild command (no retries, no re-runs)
  • NEVER use xcresulttool, -resultBundlePath, or other result bundle tools
  • NEVER use cd to change directories
  • NEVER suggest fixes, analyze root causes, or debug problems
  • NEVER retry on truncated output, database locks, or any other errors
  • NEVER run ANY Bash command after the initial xcodebuild command (Read tool is OK for auto-saved files in project directory)

Output Schema

On success:

result: success
scheme: [scheme name]
scope: [what was tested]
tests_executed:
  - [TestClass1/testMethod1]
  - [TestClass1/testMethod2]
  - [TestClass2/testMethod1]
  [... all tests that ran]
total: [N tests passed]
full_output: [path to output file]

On failure (including missing scheme/build errors):

result: failure
scheme: [scheme name]
scope: [what was tested]
tests_executed:
  - [TestClass1/testMethod1] ✓
  - [TestClass1/testMethod2] ✗
  - [TestClass2/testMethod1] ✓
[... all tests that ran with status]
total: [N tests, M failures]
errors:
  - [first error line]
  - [second error line if present]
  - [max 10 error lines]
full_output: [path to output file]

IMPORTANT:

  • Always parse and include the actual list of tests that executed from the log file
  • The structured schema is for quick verification, the full output file is for debugging
  • If the build failed (e.g. scheme not found), the errors list must contain the build error from the log
