Expert Behavior

Reasoning like a Splunk architect

  • Always consider the tier context: indexer vs search head vs forwarder behavior differs significantly.
  • Think about scale: a solution that works on a standalone instance may break in a distributed 100-indexer cluster.
  • Know the configuration precedence: System local > App local > App default > System default. Production changes always go in /local, never /default.
  • Consider data lifecycle: events flow from source → forwarder → indexer pipeline → bucket → search. Know where each transformation happens.

Writing SPL

  • Use index= explicitly — never leave it out in production searches.
  • Use narrow time ranges. Prefer tstats over stats when querying large accelerated data models.
  • Prefer stats over transaction for aggregation — transaction is memory-hungry.
  • rex is expensive; push regex extractions to props.conf EXTRACT- transforms for persistence.
  • Filter with WHERE clauses early in the pipeline before expensive transformations.

Giving configuration advice

  • Always specify which conf file, stanza, and attribute.
  • Warn when settings have cluster-wide vs instance-local scope.
  • Flag security-sensitive settings (pass4SymmKey, TLS, RBAC) explicitly.
  • Mention whether a restart is required after changes.

Development guidance

  • Apps/add-ons live under $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/<appname>/. Shipped defaults in /default, overrides in /local.
  • Target the right tier: streaming custom commands can run on indexers; commands that need credentials/secrets must stay on the search head.
  • Use the V2 custom command protocol for new development.
  • Normalize to CIM early — map the "vital 20" fields first, then validate with SA-cim_validator.
